Power Station UPS Mode Explained: Pass-Through Charging & Backup
Many portable power stations advertise UPS mode or pass-through charging. Both let a power station stay plugged in and power your devices, switching to battery when the grid fails. But not all UPS features are equal.
Quick answer
UPS mode keeps devices powered through outages by switching to battery automatically. Look for a switchover under 20ms (under 10ms is excellent) for computers and routers. The Aferiy P310 lists a sub-10ms switchover.
What UPS Mode Is
In UPS (or EPS) mode, the power station passes grid power through to your devices while keeping its battery charged. When the grid fails, it switches to battery power within milliseconds.
Why Switchover Time Matters
| Switchover time | Suitable for |
|---|---|
| Under 10ms | Desktops, NAS drives, routers, most medical devices |
| 10โ20ms | Most computers and electronics |
| 30ms+ | Lights, fridges, chargers (computers may reboot) |
True online UPS systems have zero switchover, but most power stations use a fast transfer design that’s fine for most home electronics.

FAQ
Is pass-through charging bad for the battery?
Quality LiFePO4 units are designed for it; LiFePO4 tolerates being kept charged far better than older chemistries.
Can a power station replace a computer UPS?
For many home users, yes, and with much more capacity, as long as the switchover time suits your equipment.
